NCDOT Winter Storm Facts

During and after a winter storm, crews in affected areas work around the clock to monitor changing weather conditions and treat roads.
The N.C. Department of Transportation has more than 1,900 trucks that can be equipped with plows and spreaders to remove snow and ice. If needed, NCDOT moves trucks and equipment to areas more affected by a storm.
Depending on conditions, crews might pre-treat roadways with a mixture of water and salt called brine to help prevent ice from bonding to the pavement. After plowing roadways, crews use salt and sand – or a mixture of both – on road surfaces. Salt helps melt ice and snow, and sand provides extra traction.
Brine
Brine, a solution of water and 23 percent salt, is used to pretreat roadways in dry conditions when the temperature is above 18 degrees. The decision to pre-treat roads is made 24 to 48 hours before a storm.
Brine must be applied when it is not raining. Rain dilutes the solution and washes it off the road, making it ineffective.
Among several benefits, brine:
• Lowers the freezing temperature of water to about 18 degrees (-8 degrees Celsius).
• Prevents snow and ice from bonding with the road's surface.
• Keeps snow from being compacted by traffic, which can turn it into ice.
• Is more effective and coats roadways better than plain salt or sand.
• Gives crews time, since brining can occur up to 48 hours before a storm.
• Costs 15 cents per gallon to produce. One mile of a single lane of road can be treated for about $6. Rock salt costs about $14.38 to treat the same stretch of road.
Brine is made by loading a hopper with salt and water and agitating the ingredients until the solution is 23 percent salt. The solution is pumped into a holding tank and loaded onto trucks to be sprayed on roads.
NCDOT crews will sometimes use a brine blend with 10 percent calcium to remove snow and ice during and after a winter weather event. This solution can be used in combination with rock salt when temperatures are lower to keep the salt working longer.
Salt & Sand
Crews use salt and sand to help clear roads when a storm hits. After plows clear as much snow as possible, a mixture is spread on roads, with special attention given to freeway ramps.
Salt helps to melt the remaining snow and ice. Sand helps break up the ice and adds extra traction for vehicles.

No snow but plenty of ice
hits KM and surrounding area

By Alan Hodge

This past weekend’s winter storm failed to deliver much snow, but there was enough ice to make things interesting.
Weather forecasters started warning folks about the approaching storm late last week with predictions of wintry precipitation totals of several inches of sleet and over half an inch of ice. The predictions included possible widespread power outages and advice to stock up on rations, bottled water, blankets, lanterns, propane, kerosene, and all the usual stuff.
Weather maps showed the massive storm spread across the southeast, fed by large amounts of moisture from the Gulf region and arctic air from the Great Lakes- the classic Carolina wintertime catastrophe casserole.
Friday and Saturday saw food stores mobbed and stripped of water, bread, milk and other staples. Bags of de-ice pellets were snapped up as soon as they appeared. The gold standard- electrical generators- flew out of home improvement and hardware stores. The NCDOT and local governments brined, salted, and sanded roads and bridges.
The ice started falling late Saturday afternoon. Given the fact that the ground was dry and temperatures did not get out of the 20s, the ice stuck like glue and by dark the ground was white.
Everyone held their breath regarding the possibility of electrical outages. Duke Energy had rounded up over 10,000 linemen and equipment from places as far away as Canada in case lines came down from falling tree limbs or ice accumulation. Television weather broadcasters were in their element constantly showing radar maps with where the storm was hitting and how hard.
On Sunday the ice fell in fits and spurts. It was nowhere near as much as the storm of 2002 that paralyzed our region for a week. Late Sunday afternoon, around six o’clock, the show was over. Total accumulations were about an inch of sleet and half an inch of ice.
Monday dawned brightly sunny and cold, but the temperature quickly rose above freezing and by noon many main roads were clear with a few icy spots in the shade. Backroads were still slick. Schools and many businesses were closed.
After a cold start, Tuesday’s sunshine dried out nearly all streets.
During the storm, Duke Energy’s online outage map showed scattered results in our area. Kings Mountain proper had just a few places without juice. The Light Oak area near Shelby had a considerable number of outages. Other places that took a minor hit included Crouse and Lowell in Gaston County. Crews got everyone back up in record time.
This coming weekend there’s a chance- just chance mind you- of snow. Early forecasts say about a 30 percent chance. The City of Kings Mountain wants folks to be ready and has put out the following tips on its Facebook page- https://www.facebook.com/cityofkingsmountain
• City of Kings Mountain Electric and/or Water customers should call (704) 734-0333
• City of Kings Mountain Severe Road Conditions should call (704)-734-0444
• Duke Energy Electric customers should call (800)-769-3766
• Rutherford Electric Membership Corporation customers should call (800)-228-5331
• To report a possible natural gas leak, please evacuate the area and call 911
Be sure to follow the city website at www.cityofkm.com and  Facebook page, where updates will be made when available.
Duke Energy also sent out bulletin warning folks about after-storm scammers. It’s on the City of Kings Mountain  Facebook page.
The Duke Energy Power Outage map and other information is very useful at https://outagemap.duke-energy.com/#/home
Finally, here’s some safety tips for winter weather events-https://www.readync.gov/winter-weather
The bottom line? Be ready and safe for whatever Mother Nature throws at us for the rest of this winter. Hopefully it will be nothing.

James Peter “Jim” Testa

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – James “Jim” Testa, 86, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away peacefully on November 09, 2025 at Testa Family Hospice House with his loving family by his side. Born September 26, 1939 in Chicago Heights, IL, he was the son of the late George Peter Testa and Olga Gaetano Testa. Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 24 years, Sandra Adams Testa, and his daughters Kimberly Ann Sisk and Paula Lea Nance.
Jim lived an extraordinary life—though he never set out to be extraordinary. He built his legacy through integrity, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to doing what was right.
For many years, Jim owned and operated the Kings Mountain Travel Center (formerly the Roadside Truck Plaza), serving both the trucking industry and his community with honesty and dedication. His entrepreneurial spirit was matched by a genuine care for others, qualities that made him a respected figure throughout Cleveland County. In 2004, Jim ran for the North Carolina State Senate, driven by his belief in hard work and civic responsibility. His name also lives on through the Testa Family Hospice House, a reflection of his generosity and compassion toward others. What made Jim truly remarkable was not just what he accomplished—but how he lived. He helped countless people, directly and indirectly, often without realizing the extent of his impact. His strength came from his belief that no problem could be solved without hard work. If hard work didn’t fix it, he believed in working even harder. He never made excuses, never gave in, and never lived by the “do as I say, not as I do” rule. He simply showed up every day and did what was right—because it mattered to him. Jim’s approach to life inspired everyone around him. He understood that while it’s easy to fool others, the one person you can never fool is yourself. He lived by that truth, and it shaped the man he became—a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and leader. Outside of business, one of Jim’s greatest joys was golf. The game gave him peace, friendship, and the same mix of discipline and patience that guided him in life. Jim’s impact cannot be fully captured in words or summed up in a list of achievements. His true legacy lives in the example he set—the belief that challenges can be turned into opportunities through persistence, humility, and heart. He will be remembered always for his strength, kindness, and quiet leadership.
He is surived by his son: Trenton James Testa and wife Natalie “Scoti” of Charlotte, NC; daughter: Debbie Nance Cox and husband Tom of Belmont, NC; brother: Ronald George Testa and wife Barbara of Frankfort, IL; granddaughters: Natalie James “N.J.” Testa and Brooke Elaine Cox; beloved nieces and nephew: Sarah Testa, Eric Testa and Rebecca Testa.

Rev. James Leon Hamrick

KINGS MOUNTAIN- Reverend James Leon Hamrick, affectionately known to many as “Hambone” or “Preacher”, peacefully passed over to glory on October 8, 2025, at the age of 85, at home in Kings Mountain, NC. Born on May 25, 1940, in Gaston County, he lived a life that was as rich in spirit as it was in love.
Earning Doctorate Degrees in Divinity and Biblical Studies, James was a man whose life preached the gospel every bit as powerfully as did his words. A devoted pastor and founder of Pathway Baptist Church, he shepherded his flock for over 47 years. What began humbly in an auto mechanics garage as a mission, flourished into a thriving church, a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication. As a brick mason, James’ hands were as skilled with bricks or stone as they were open to others, often laying the foundation of a home or mending a soul with his love for gospel music. Every note he sang was a testimony, every brick he laid, a mark of his steadfast character.  He was a true artisan, utilizing brick and mortar as mediums to design and create something beautiful, from custom fireplaces to stunning brick homes.
Beyond the pulpit and the worksite, James found joy and peace in nature. An avid fisherman, he organized an annual men’s fishing trip and retreat starting in 1997, bringing together friends, family, and neighboring churches to worship and enjoy God’s creation.  Gardening, another favorite pastime, encapsulated his love for planting and cultivating vegetables.  The harvest he shared with family, friends, and strangers, much the same way he shared the gospel of Jesus Christ and the gift of salvation.
His love for bluegrass music and gospel hymns was infectious. To him they were not just songs, but heartfelt praises.
James had a heart as big as his sense of humor.  He spread laughter and kindness everywhere he went, turning strangers into friends with his fun-loving spirit and twinkling blue eyes. Known for waving at every passerby and sharing his favorite sayings, “Don’t take any wooden nickels” and “Do you live around here or ride a bicycle”, he spread warmth and wisdom with a generous heart. James was a staple in his community, a man who knew everyone and was beloved by all.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Marie (Guyton) Hamrick, and brothers, Ronnie, Joe, and Reid Hamrick.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Diane Hoyle Hamrick; his son Jamie Hamrick and wife Mary; daughters Joanie White and husband Dennis, Anne Marie Breakfield and husband Ken, and Sarah Ballard and husband Walter; sister Anarah Deviney and husband Tommy; brothers Keeter Hamrick and wife Pat, and John Wayne Hamrick and wife Sherry; grandchildren Rainey Frady and husband Jonathan, Luke Breakfield and wife Logan, Dustin Breakfield, Wendi Potter and husband Josh, Samantha Busby and husband Tyler, Kathryn Norris, Kassidy Justus and husband Adam, Jon Hamrick, and Cara White; great-grandchildren Jake, Raelynn, Abel, Jep, Walker, Annie, James, and Taylor; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 4:00PM at Sunrise Baptist Church. A visitation was held prior to the service from 2:00PM to 3:45 PM at the church.

Ewa Szymańska Milewski

July 18, 1928 –
September 23, 2025

On September 23, 2025, with her daughter by her side, Ewa Maria Szymańska Milewski was welcomed into God’s arms at the age of 97.
She was born in Warsaw, Poland as the oldest daughter of Col. Antoni and Halina Szymański. After World War II, at a Polish officer social in England, she met the love of her life, Andrzej. Before she even turned to greet him, she said she felt an angel touch her shoulder and whisper, “Pay attention. This man is important to you.” Known for her honesty and spirit, she asked Andrzej after only three dates, “Is this just for fun, or is this going somewhere permanent?” And it was permanent. The two married on February 2, 1950, and lived a love story of more than 72 years. They danced to La Vie en Rose, flirted to the end, and showed us every day that love isn’t just a feeling—it’s a commitment you make every day, again and again.
Ewa’s life was defined by faith and family. With Andrzej, she prayed daily—for those who asked and for those who didn’t even know they needed prayer. She blessed every child and grandchild—no matter their age—with a sign of the cross on their forehead when they left the house. She lived her faith in action, in service, and in love.
She was also a maker of things: meals, sweaters, bread, clothes, and warm memories. Her chicken with lemon sauce was legendary—not just because it was delicious, but because it felt like a hug in a dish. She believed that love multiplies and the more you give the more it grows. And that’s how she raised a big family with an even bigger heart.
She poured that same spirit into her work and community. She volunteered in youth ministry and served as Director of Religious Education at her second home, St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Gastonia, NC, helping countless children and families grow in faith.
Ewa is survived by her brother, Piotr; her children Maciej (Helen), Teresa (Rodney), Lech (Hania), Halina, Jolanta (Scott), and Elzbieta; grandchildren Karen (Pete), Aleksandra, Matthew (Diana), Kristina (Baqir), and Kate (Cameron); and great-grandchildren Amelia and Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrzej; her son, Bogdan; her foster daughter, Robin; her sisters, Anna and Marysia— all of whom surely welcomed her with joy in Heaven.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sisters of Mercy in Belmont, NC, or Trellis Supportive Care in Winston-Salem, NC.
Her legacy is simple and powerful: pray faithfully, love generously, and never forget that love is a choice you make every day.

She grew up in Patterson Springs with her older brother, William (Bill) Hayne Patterson, Jr., surrounded by a large extended family in Shelby, Patterson Springs, and Earl. She had 22 cousins. Betty was the widow of the late Bennett John Masters, Sr. Together they raised three children.
She graduated from Number 3 School, where she drove a school bus and played softball. As a young woman, with encouragement from one of her aunts, she took voice lessons and developed a beautiful soprano voice. She kept a book recording the many weddings and funerals where she sang. Later, she was a longtime member of the Chancel Choir at Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain, where she sang at numerous community events, often alongside Jake Dixon or Sonny Peeler.
She graduated from nursing school at Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Betty and her family lived in Dallas, Texas; Landrum, SC; and Canton, NC, before settling in Kings Mountain, where she has lived for the past sixty-one years.
Over her career, she worked at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, for Dr. Numa Carter in Shelby, at Shelby Hospital (now Atrium Health), and at Kings Mountain Hospital. She served as a surgical nurse, floor nurse, and in labor and delivery.
Her most meaningful role was serving as the School Nurse for the Kings Mountain School District, where she worked for thirty-six years and cared for at least three generations of students. Betty always called the children “her kids,” and she meant it. She made sure students had what they needed to succeed. If a child required hearing aids, glasses, or other support that their family could not afford, she was quick to call on local civic leaders to ensure the child received it.
Beyond nursing, Betty was active in the Colonel Frederick Hambright Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), where she assisted over 120 people in tracing their genealogy to join that chapter and others. During her 41years of DAR service, she held every position in the chapter, including Chapter Regent. She served as a District Director, State Vice-Chair of Membership, Chair of Commemorative Events, Volunteer Genealogist, and Chair of the Program & Literacy Promotion.
She is survived by her children: Bennett John Masters, Jr. of Tampa, Florida and husband Lay Maharatboutdy; Robin Lewis Masters Meyer of Charlotte and husband Don Meyer; and Mary LeeAnn Masters Hendricks of Charlotte and husband Jay Hendricks. The light of her life were her two grandchildren, Jackson Wade Hendricks (Peyton) of Raleigh and Cassie Elizabeth Hendricks of Charlotte/Boone. Also, Nathaniel Meyer (Sarah) and Andrew Meyer (Lesley) and 6 great-grandchildren.
