KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Doris Nell Spearman, 92, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on January 26, 2022 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby, NC.
 She was born in Cherokee County, SC, daughter of the late Emmett and Ethel Farris Childers and was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William Glenn Spearman. Doris was also preceded in death by 3 sisters, Mildred Caldwell, Faye Lovelace, and Betty Hughes.
She was a longtime faithful member of Oak View Baptist Church where she played the piano and organ from 1974 until 2017. She retired from the textile industry after many years of dedicated service. Doris was an avid reader, loved traveling, and making beautiful needlework crafts for her family that will be treasured for many years. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who loved spending time with her family. Her kindness, guidance, and generosity will be missed by everyone who knew Doris.
She is survived by daughters: Elaine Anderson (Eddie), and Glenda Waters (Dwayne), both of Kings Mountain, NC; grandchildren: Krystal Proctor, Charlotte, NC, Shannon Elmore (Bennett), Kings Mountain, NC, and Lauren Thornburg (Jamie), Grover, NC; great-grandchildren: Bentlee and Khaegyn Elmore, and Jaxxon Thornburg; sister: Joyce Roark (Don), Kings Mountain, NC and a special sister: Bessie Blanton, Clover, SC.

 KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Michael Scott Powers Sr., 79, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on January 23, 2022 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby, NC.
He was born in Mecklenburg County, NC, son of the late Fred Ertle and Norma Crook Powers.
Mickey loved the Lord and was a long time member of First Baptist Church, Kings Mountain. He attended Appalachian State University where he earned his Masters Degree in Administration. Mickey worked in sales for more than 25 years and in education for many years, teaching school and eventually retiring from Cleveland County Schools as an Assistant Principal at Kings Mountain Middle School. Mr. Powers was admired by his fellow educators and students alike for his determination, work ethic and the passion he possessed for education. Mickey also taught at Cleveland Community College in the G.E.D. Program. He was an avid golfer and worked at the Masters Golf Tournament for more than 30 years as a Gallery Supervisor on the 7th hole. Mickey was an animal lover and adored his canine companion "Willie Mae". The impression Mickey made on his family, students, friends, and his community will never be forgotten. He will be missed tremendously by everyone whose lives he touched.

Middlesex, MA – Barbara Brooks Gantt, 66, passed away January 16, 2022. A native of Middlesex, Mass., she was born to the late Thomas and Rose McCoine Brooks. She was also preceded in death by her husband Louis Gantt. She is survived by her daughter Heather Clucas and husband Matt of Kings Mountain, brothers Tom Brooks and wife Teresa of Kings Mountain, Randy Brooks and Jimmy Brooks and wife Susan, both of Shelby, grandchildren Zack Hayes and wife Ambriel, great grandchild Sophia Hayes, granddaughter Chloe Hayes, step grandchildren Aubreanna, Luke, and Katilyn Clucas, all of Kings Mountain, her life long friend Lauri Spearman and all of her teammates with the Silver Belles softball team.
Barbara was a member of the Beth Shiloh Messianic Synagogue. She loved playing softball and took her Crest High School team to the North Carolina state championship. She also loved her horses.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – James “Jimmy” A. Littlejohn, 80, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away suddenly on January 15, 2022 at his home.
He was born in Gaston County, NC, to the late James E. Littlejohn and Sarah Beth Coon Littlejohn Pendleton and was preceded in death by his step father, Cecil A. Pendleton.
Jimmy attended Kings Mountain Baptist Church while growing up. He retired from Lithium Corp after many years of service. Jimmy served his country by serving in the North Carolina National Guard. His life revolved around his classic cars, following all types of sports, keeping in touch with his family and friends and enjoying 50’s and 60’s rock and roll and beach music. An outstanding KMHS football player and dedicated youth football coach for many years, Jimmy was inducted into the Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his sister: Susan Gibson and husband Barry, Kings Mountain, NC; nieces: Mary Elizabeth Carrigan and husband Jamie, and Jennifer Ann Conner and husband Shan, both of Kings Mountain, NC; great nephews: Gibson and Harrison Conner, both of Kings Mountain, NC; special family friends: Kimberly Deal Sanders, Tim Sanders, Brad Austin, and Keith Falls

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Mary “Sis” Elizabeth (Cook) Heath, born November 1st, 1942 in Easley, SC, passed away January 20th, 2022 at 5:27 AM at Testa Hospice House in Kings Mountain.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John Cook and Mary Ella Kate Cook Reynolds, her siblings Earl Cook and Ruby Willis; brother-in-law Bob Willis; sister-in-law Faye Cook; and niece Shelia Willis.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC– Keiko Nishiyama, 69, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2022. Born in Japan, she came to the United States in 1977, and settled in Kings Mountain. She was preceded in death by her husband, Masahiro Lee Nishiyama, her parents, and a sister.
After raising her three sons, she opened Keiko’s Massage Therapy in Shelby, which she operated for almost 20 years. In her spare time, she volunteered at a local hospice facility and enjoyed gardening, hiking, needlework, and experiencing new things. Her kindness and generosity will be missed greatly by everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her sons Hiroki, Naoki, and Yuuki (Emily); grandsons Beckham and Owen; a brother, sister, and aunt.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Charlene Sellers, 78, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on January 13, 2022 at Testa Hospice House in Kings Mountain, NC.
She was born in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late Hugh W. and Helen Parrish Yates and was preceded in death by her brother, Eric Yates.
Charlene was of the Christian faith. She worked in the manufacturing industry most of her life. Charlene was an avid animal lover and enjoyed feeding the neighborhood animals and spending time watching the birds that frequented the feeders at her home. She loved being outside tending to her flowers and keeping her lawn neat and tidy. Charlene loved people and was always willing to help anyone in need. Always a generous person, Charlene donated to several charities who help animals and veterans. She was a wonderful mother, sister, friend, and neighbor who will be missed greatly by her loved ones.
She is survived by her son: Todd Sellers and wife Wendi of Kings Mountain, NC; sister: Jane Frye and husband David of Asheville, NC and  sister-in-law: Sherry Yates of Kings Mountain, NC.

GASTONIA, NC – Corinne Elizabeth “Beth” Tittle, 71, of Gastonia, NC, passed away on January 12, 2022 at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, NC.
She was born in Mecklenburg County, NC, daughter of the late Harold and Doris Joyner O’Shields and was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth O’Shields.
Beth was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain and worked as an assistant teacher for more than 10 years. Beth loved Jesus with her whole heart and her love for people was displayed everyday. She possessed a radiance that penetrated the lives of everyone she met. Her constant encouragement and eagerness to fill the needs of others was an inspiration to her entire community. Beth loved her friends and family and one of her greatest joys was being “Nana” to her grandchildren. Her strength, loyalty, guidance and love will be missed more than words can express by everyone who knew her. Beth was loved beyond measure by her family and friends.

Youngstown, Ohio  – James H. Hope, 76 of Youngstown, Ohio  died Friday afternoon at Heritage Manor.
James was born May 10, 1945 in Archdale, NC, a son of the late Winfred and Ada (Howell) Hope.
James was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp/Air America  serving in the Vietnam War. He was a former member of Zion Hill United Brethren Church and Locust Grove Baptist Church.  He was also a member of the Columbiana American Legion, the VFW of Washingtonville, Air America Association and the Moose Lodge of Winston-Salem, NC. James retired in 1999 as owner/operator of Falcon MC Distributing, a Travel Accessory Business.
His wife, the former Ethelda Hofmann, whom he married January 2, 1966, died November 12, 2011.  He will be sadly missed by his children, Marcia (Wes) Hope-Warren of Virginia, Connie Mae (Melvan) Saunders of Columbiana, Dawn I. Karash of Boardman and grandchildren, Amelia (Justin) Oaks, Melvan (Maria) Saunders,Jr.,  Thomas (Kristin) Saunders,  Kirk Wolf, Kaleigh Saunders and Hope Karash and four great-grandchildren, Julius Saunders, Natalie Saunders, Benjamin Oaks and William Oaks.  James also leaves a sister, Shirley (Charles) Bradham of Clover, SC, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and his wife, James was preceded in death by three brothers, Winfred Hope, Kenneth Hope, Larry Hope  and a granddaughter, Angel Whitehair. KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Kenneth “Ken” S. Bryan, 68, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on December 23, 2021 at Testa Family Hospice House in Kings Mountain, NC.
He was born in Hertford County, NC. Mr. Bryan was retired from Duke Energy after 36 years of service and was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, Kings Mountain. NC. He was a talented musician  who enjoyed playing the bass, guitar and drums. He got his start singing in the children’s choirs at Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church and later sang in the NC Boys Choir for several years. He was a member of several bands over the years and currently a member of the Whiskey’s Alibi Band,  recording several CDs.  Ken was also a member of the Duke Retirement Lunch Group and enjoyed nature and the outdoors. His hobbies included hiking, canoeing, kayaking, crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years: Patricia “Pat” W. Bryan, Kings Mountain NC; mother and father: John and Dott M. Faulkenbury, Durham, NC; brother: Greg Bryan and wife Karen, Willow Spring, NC; Greg Faulkenbury and wife Dil, Fort Mill, SC; beloved dog: Sasha; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Toy Max Davis, 75, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on December 31, 2021 at his home.
 He was born in Cleveland County, NC, son of the late Franklin and Mandy Pryor Davis and was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Roy Davis.
Toy was a member of Patterson Grove Baptist Church and a Master Mason at State Line Lodge 375. He worked at PPG for 29 years and was also a contractor for many years. He enjoyed working with his hands, doing carpentry work, and working to keep his home and yard beautiful. Toy enjoyed sharing stories with anyone who would listen, often recounting the joys and hardships of his childhood. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather to many, and a father figure to so many more. He will be missed greatly by everyone who knew and loved him.

SHELBY, NC – Betty Champion Greene, 82, formerly of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2021 at her home.
She was born in Wake County, NC, daughter of the late James Robert Champion Sr and Lindsey Carroll Champion and was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Emmett Odell Greene. Betty was also preceded in death by her brothers, Donald W. and James Robert Champion Jr., and her sister, Edna C. Harrison.
She was a current member of David Baptist Church and a former member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Betty was an avid shopper and loved collecting angels. She loved spending time with her grandchildren who were always the center of her life. Betty, affectionately known as “Granny”, was in constant prayer. She prayed without ceasing for everyone she met and loved. Her generous, kind, and loving spirit will be missed tremendously by everyone who knew and loved Granny. Until we see you again: “Do you know what?”.... “I love you”.

 GAFFNEY, SC—Veronica A. Petry, 38 of Gaffney, SC, died Saturday, December 18, 2021 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born March 15, 1983 in Tazewell County, Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles Allen and Sandra Anette Boyd Adkins.
A US Army veteran, Mrs. Petry was employed with Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She was a member of North Point Church in Gaffney, SC. She taught in the children’s ministry.
She graduated Kings Mountain High School, Class of 2001. With her love of music and playing clarinet and the saxophone, brought her to play in the high school band. She was team captain in Volleyball and were conference champions.
Along with her parents, she is survived by her husband of 14 years, Samuel Eugene Petry II, her son, Tripp Petry of Gaffney, SC, her siblings, Marisa Fraizer (Christopher) of Spartanburg, Zenas Adkins, Elizabeth Atkins, and Celena Atkins, all of Kings Mountain, NC, numerous nieces and nephews, along with many great friends.

SHELBY, NC – Phyllis Elaine Thompson, 74, of Shelby, NC went to Heaven on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.
Born in Murphy, NC (Cherokee County) on February 11, 1947, she was the daughter of Lydia Magaline Davenport Thompson and Kermit Wayne Thompson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Walters.
Phyllis was retired from the Patrick Senior Center (City of Kings Mountain). She previously attended Pleasant City Church before becoming a resident at Peak Resources Cherryville.

GROVER, NC – Myra Kay Howell, 79, of Grover, NC, passed away surrounded by her loving daughters on December 9, 2021 at Testa Hospice in Kings Mountain, NC. She was born in Cherokee County, SC, daughter of the late David Durbro and Myra Louise Phillips McCarter and was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jimmie Lee Howell. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dana Marie Howell, her brother, David Douglas McCarter, and her stepfather, Frank Dale Batchelor. Kay retired from Cleveland County Schools where she worked for many years as a bus driver and in the cafeteria at Grover Elementary School. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Grover. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and reading her bible daily. Kay loved spending time with her family whom she loved with all her heart. The memory of her love, guidance, and  kindness will be cherished by everyone who knew and loved Kay.
She is survived by daughters: Kelly Crocker (Michael), Grover, NC and Leigh Howell, Earl, NC; sisters: Gwenne McCarter, Blacksburg, SC and Lisa Batchelor Booth and her husband Reverend Bill Booth, Maryville, TN; 7 grandchildren and 5 great- grandchildren.
Funeral service was held on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at 2:30 PM at First Baptist Grover with Reverends Scott Kerstead and Bill Booth officiating.
Visitation was held on Sunday, December 12, 2021 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM prior to the service in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church.
Interment was held in Grover Cemetery.

Violet Doris Spencer (Doris), 88, wife of Kenneth Lee Spencer was born in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, Doris was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Idell Riddle. Doris passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at Hendersonville Health and Rehab.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents John Wesley and Idell Riddle and her great granddaughter Ella Grace Mintz.
Doris is survived by her husband Ken, her children Rob Spencer (Marie) of Landrum, SC, Kenny Spencer (Debbie) of Heath TX, Lisa Arrowood of Walhalla, SC and Kelly Lupinski (Larry) of East Hampton CT. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren Shena Mintz (Sean) of Saluda NC, Ashley Eller (MJ) of Westminster, SC, Jamie Miller (Matthew) of Tuscon, AZ.,   Abby Arrowood of Seneca, SC., Alexis Arrowood of Walhalla, SC, Sam Spencer and Kate Spencer of Heath TX and 6 great grandchildren Brilee, Bryce, Avery, Callie, Solomon and Creedence.
Doris was a dedicated wife, mother, and teacher that lit up any room she walked into. Her smile was contagious as she would snicker at her own jokes and antics. Doris worked at St John’s Preschool nurturing the children as if they were her own. Doris will be dancing in heaven in one of her well-known Christmas sweaters this year continuing to smile down on earth.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held on Sunday, December 19th, 2021 at 2:00 pm at the Chapel of Sandifer Funeral Home, 512 East Main Street, Westminster, SC.

On Tuesday, December 17, 2019, a memorial service, graveside service and Celebration of Life reception was held for Fugitive Recovery Agent James Michael Black Jr. who was killed in the line of duty.  Originally from Kings Mountain, NC he resided with his family in Lake Elsinore, CA. The funeral services were held at the St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Wildomar CA. and at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside CA.
Jamie was preceded in death by his father James Michael Black of Maiden NC;  his paternal grandparents Joseph and Lucille Black of Bessemer City and his maternal grandparents Jonas Leroy and Clara Lee McCraw of Kings Mountain, He was also preceded in death by  his stepfather David Keith Pendleton who instilled in him his lifelong love for the Marines.
Jamie, 42, died after being shot by a federal fugitive and career criminal whom Jamie was attempting to apprehend  on the evening of December 3, 2019 in San Moreno CA. The fugitive then became the subject of a manhunt by the San Bernardino and Riverside Sheriff’s Departments who, jointly, located and killed the fugitive in a shootout less than 48 hours later in San Bernardino.
He is remembered as a devoted family man who was outgoing and compassionate, as well as a role model and mentor to many of the fugitive recovery agents that worked under his supervision. His warm and friendly southern personality would shine through when he often reminded his friends, “I appreciate you.”
Black attended Cleveland Tech for a short time after graduating from Kings Mountain High School but was recommended to IBM by an instructor and after graduating from the International School of Business in Chicago, became the youngest IBM employee on the East coast. He stayed with them for three years but then joined the Marines so he could jump out of airplanes.
He started his career as an enlisted serviceman in the Air Intelligence branch of the U.S. Marine Corps and progressed to a commissioned officer after earning his Masters in Criminal Justice.  His first command was in LA in the aftermath of Katrina. He earned the respect and devotion of his men there by finding big screen TVs, copes of current movies and meals from Outback for his guys during their down time.  They were the envy of all military servicemen in that area. Jamie could never do enough for the people he cared for.
After 14 years and multiple deployments to Iraq as an Intelligence Operations Officer he resigned his commission and went on to  become a private contractor in Afghanistan.  He commanded one quarter of the countries civilian forces for three years and was the youngest commander in the country.  James then returned to Southern California and using the skills and certifications he acquired while serving our country,  he began working as a Fugitive Recovery Agent for the Federal government and licensed private investigator, ultimately founding and supervising the largest independent bail fugitive recovery team in California, the U.S. Fugitive Service International (Black Umbrella Group)  located in Lake Elsinore, CA.
He is survived by the only woman he ever loved, his wife Michelle Vasquez Black; his five children Austin Black (Samira), James Black III, Ashlynn Black, Logan Black and Aleena Black. He is also survived by his two sisters,  Donna Cantrell (Ronald) Short of Grover, and Tanya Storm of Bellingham, WA and his brothers Joseph(Amanda) Black and Brian Black as well as his stepmother Rita Black of Maiden and his much loved stepfather Robert Moses. Also left to barely survive his passing is his mother, Teresa McCraw Moses.
Her son lived and died a hero.  His funeral was no exception to the larger than  life he lived. There were sheriff cars leading the procession down a major highway while motorcycle cops shut down the exits and held back thousands of cars  so Jamie  could go by. There were flags flying on the police bikes and cars and the motorcycle honor guard from the Marines led his casket with their own flags. There were so many cars in the procession they had to brought into the cemetery in two directions to get them all parked. At the beautiful but stark military cemetery where his spot is there were bagpipes played and guns fired and long walks following behind his casket through cordons of honor guards and marines.
The legacy her son left is huge, his business thrives, the home he left for his family is beautiful,  and all his children are blessed with his intelligence and sweet disposition.
He was 42 when he went left us but to his mom he is still her little boy.  The one she caught jumping off the back of the trailer in his batman costume one day when she was returning home from work, the little boy that constantly amazed and delighted her with an imagination like no one else she ever knew. He was the child that went to the ER so many times because he thought he could do  everything.   His mom spent countless hours at the school houses because his personality and his intelligence led him into situations other kids wouldn’t even think about.  All so he could become the man he was. He was a hero to the world and to his family.  He had lost his dad and grandparents by the time he was 15 and it was just the two of them.  He was her best friend through the hardest parts of her life.  He accepted what could not be changed at a young age and it made him stronger and a lot older than his years. His mom was and still is proud of him even when she was mad at him. She is  blessed beyond words to have been the mother of Jamie Black.  She would not trade one minute of that to be released from the grief she lives with.  The Lord will hold her hand, keep her strong and walk with her every step till she can be reunited with her child.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC  – Lori Ann Enus, 48, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on December 4, 2021 at her  residence.  She was born in Essex, MA.  She was preceded in death by her father, Michael Mehlman. Lori was an independent contractor with Little Debbie Snack Co.  
She is survived by partner: Nancy Bridges, Kings Mtn. NC; mother: LuAnn Brown Mehlman, Shelby, NC; step-mother: Joy Burns, Hickory, NC; sister: Wanda LaRhette, Shelby, NC; her beloved pets: Piper, Bear and cat Ray; niece: Jamie Lee LaRhette, Shelby NC; nephews: J.R. STANLEY, NC – Mary Ruth Goforth, 81, formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away on November 30, 2021 at Stanley Total Living in Stanley, NC.
She was born in Cleveland County, NC, and was preceded in death by her father, Claude Edwards and her mother, Evelyn Allen Hill. Mary was also preceded in death by her second husband, Charles Goforth Jr, and her siblings, Mike Edwards and Pat Edwards.
She was a former member of Northside Baptist Church in Charlotte. Mary worked in the nursery business for many years and loved being outdoors, working in the yard, and growing beautiful flowers. She enjoyed staying active, cross stitching, quilting, working sudoku, and reading. Mary enjoyed listening to Christian music and spending time with her loved ones. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother whose love and guidance will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.

William Ashmore Tinsley (96) of Leeś Summit, MO passed away Wednesday, December 1 at Ignite Hospice Center in Blue Springs, MO.
Bill lived his adult life in Kings Mountain, NC until 2017 when he moved to Missouri to live with his son Kevin.
Bill met and married Peggy Dixon, daughter of Kelly and Blanche Patterson Dixon of Kings Mountain, where they settled in to live their married life in the town they both loved. Bill and Peggy would go on to adopt their only child, Kevin Dixon Tinsley in 1959.
As a man, father, grandfather, and friend Bill lived his life with quiet humility and courage. A Navy veteran of World War II, Bill loved raising his son and being around his grandsons.
Survivors include his son Kevin, a daughter-in-law Charlotte Rose, four grandsons - Kelly Dixon Tinsley, Kevin Philip Tinsley, Wiliam Ashmore Tinsley II and Timothy Patrick Tinsley, a great-grandson Cohen Tinsley and great-granddaughters Ember and Scarlet Tinsley. Extended family survivors include Lane Dixon, brother-in-law, sister-in-laws Dot Dixon, Marilyn Dixon Hamrick, and Becky Dixon Patterson, plus several nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.
As his family, we will never again watch the South Carolina Gamecocks (Billś Alma Mater) without our hearts being just a bit saddened to not have him there. Whether it be a plate of nachos or a batch of chicken wings, he was always ready to watch a weekend of ball. So many things about him will be missed, especially his one-of-a-kind smile, his gentle heart, and his one-liner wit. May God rest his blessed soul.
Services were held on Tuesday, December 7 at Kings Mountain Central United Methodist Church.
Visitation was at 9:00 a.m., service at 10:00 a.m. and Committal Service immediately followed at Frederick Memorial Gardens, Gaffney, NC.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Thelma Eubanks Owens, 91, died Wednesday, December 2, 2021 at Alexandria Place of Gastonia.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Hullender Eubanks.
Thelma was a loving mother and grandmother who was a member of Pathway Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Herman Sprouse, Albany McKeehan, and Carl Owens; son, William Sprouse; grandson, Dreighton Sprouse; and great granddaughter, Rosa Lee Sprouse.
She is survived by her sons, Arthur Sprouse and wife Genetta of  Bessemer City and Dennis Sprouse and wife Becky of Clover, SC; daughter, Renee Jackson of Fort Mill, SC; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and cat, Sue-Sue. A graveside service was held at 2PM, on Tuesday December 7, 2021, in Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis Harmon officiating.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Kathy  Elaine Hannon, 72, of Kings Mountain passed away December 1, 2021, at Atrium Health Cleveland, Shelby.
She was born May 27, 1949, in Cleveland County, daughter of the late Mereda Boyce Hannon and Katherine Blackwell Hannon.
Kathy loved her dolls and stuffed animals.
She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
A graveside service was held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, officiated by Pastor Barry Philbeck.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – John O. Van Dyke, 86, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on December 1, 2021 at Testa Family Hospice House in Kings Mountain, NC.
He was born in Cleveland Co,  NC, to the late Robert R. Van Dyke and Ollie Padgett Van Dyke.  He was also preceded in death by his brother, Marshall Van Dyke.
John was employed for over 40 years as a lab analyst with Foote Mineral Co, Kings Mtn. and a member of El Bethel United Methodist Church, formerly serving as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Lay Speaker, and Training Union Director. He served in the United States Army after World War II in the Peace Keeping Force in Germany. John was a wonderful husband, father and friend who was always willing to help anyone in need. 
He is survived by his wife: Joyce Redding Van Dyke, Kings Mtn. NC; daughter: Roberta J. Van Dyke, Kings Mtn. NC; special family friends: Andy De Bruler and Bobby and  Cindy Phillips .

GROVER, NC– Edwin “Larry” O’Leary White, 84, of Grover NC, passed away on November 18, 2021 at Atrium Health Cleveland. He was born in Cleveland County, NC, son of Dennis Buette and Inez Blalock White.
Larry worked at Minnette Mills as a designer for many years, and later at Grandpa’s Store.
He was a talented artist and pianist. He appeared on the Arthur Smith show in the 1960s with the Kingsman quartet and entertained his family with his music for a lifetime. Larry is best remembered for his rowdy sense of humor and infinite kindness.
He was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose passing will be mourned by everyone who knew and loved him.
Larry is survived by his daughters Desiree “Toni” A. White (husband Bruce A. Rogers), St. Louis, MO, and Bridgette D. White, Grover, NC, as well as his granddaughters B. Desiree White, Grover, NC and Sophia P. Rogers, St. Louis, MO.
Awaiting him in heaven are his parents, his siblings Margie, Don, and Wendell, and his ex-spouse and lifelong friend Marjorie Allen White.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Bobby F. Maner, 94, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on November 24, 2021 at Atrium Health Cleveland in Shelby, NC. He was born in Wilmington, NC, son of the late Frank Garrett and Lois Norris Maner and was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Jeanne Sommers Maner. He was also preceded in death by a son, Frank G. “Bo” Maner, II and a daughter in law, Susan Martin Maner. Bob attended Davidson College where he lettered in basketball and received his undergraduate degree. He earned his Masters degree from UNC Chapel Hill. After college, Bob served honorably in the US Navy during the Korean War. He was the founder of B.F. Maner Insurance Agency, Inc.
He is survived by his son: Robert S. Maner, Kings Mountain, NC; daughter: Sarah M. Lawrence and husband Alan, High Point, NC; grandchild: Joseph M. Maner and wife Stephanie H. Maner; great-grandchild: Shepherd Martin Maner

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Donald Ray Smith, 79, of Kings Mountain, passed away November 13, 2021, at his home.
He was born April 3, 1942,  in Cleveland County, son of the late Manuel D. Smith and Eunice McFalls Smith.
Donald was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Kings Mountain.
One of his greatest joys was his grandchildren and his loving family.
He was a produce manager with Harris Teeter for over 42 years.
He raised Field Trial Beagles.
He was an avid fan of Mountaineer football and basketball and was a member of the Booster Club.
A memorial service was held 3:00 pm Sunday, November 21, 2021, at Faith Baptist Church, 1009 Linwood Road, Kings Mountain, officiated by Pastor JR Robbins and Pastor Robert Eng.
The family received friends 2-3 pm Sunday at the church prior to the service.
Donald is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Gladden Smith; daughters, Lisa Smith Sisk and husband Darrell, Tracie Smith Merchant and husband Chris; sister, Betty Sarvis of Pompano FL; brothers, Charles T. Smith and wife Helen, Paul D. Smith, Michael E. KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC –  Betty Champion Thornburg, 88, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on November 16, 2021 at Atrium Health Cleveland in Shelby, NC.
She was born in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late Lyman Edmond and Gertrude Ledford Champion and was preceded in death by her husband  of 56 years, Newell Thornburg and two sons, Rodney Dale and Alan Scott Thornburg. Betty was also preceded in death by her brother Carl Champion and a sister, Della Bell.
She was a long time member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where she enjoyed playing softball with the Women’s Church League. Betty retired after many years of service with the former First Union Bank of Kings Mountain. Always active, Betty enjoyed sewing, embroidering, and cooking wonderful meals. Betty had a giving heart and enjoyed helping anyone in need. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her thoughtfulness and love will be dearly missed by her family and many friends..

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Timothy “Tim”  David Ross, 57, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on November 13, 2021 at Atrium Health in Charlotte, NC.  Born in Cleveland Co, NC. He was son of the late Jerry Anderson Ross and Brenda McFalls Ross.
Tim was formerly employed with Rockwood Lithium, Kings Mountain, NC. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Fairview Masonic Lodge #339 and the Oasis Shriners.   He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who enjoyed spending time with his family, baseball, music and outdoor activities. 
He is survived by his wife of 36 years: Debbie Smith Ross, Kings Mountain; sons: Tanner Ross and wife Savannah, Kings Mountain; Tyler Ross, Kings Mountain; daughter: Tiffany Ross, Kings Mountain; granddaughter: Harper Ross; sisters: Tammy Ross Thornburg and husband Lanny, Kings Mountain. ; Toni Ross Putman, Kings Mountain.
Funeral service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church on Wednesday,
November 17, 2021  at 3:00 P.M. Rev. Dr. Steve Taylor will officiate.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC –  A loving mother of five and incredible inspiration for so many, Bridget Glass Martin, 58, of Kings Mountain passed away on Wednesday, November 10, surrounded by her family.
Bridget was born on August 21,1963 to Janice Brackett Glass and Harold Moffitt Glass of Kings Mountain. A pillar of her community, she owned her own business and worked with many local businesses and local governments. Bridget was an active member of her church community and choirs and a member of both Macedonia Baptist Church and most recently, First Presbyterian Church of Kings Mountain. She attended Kings Mountain High School and Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
Bridget is survived by her five children, Kirsten, Drew, Ariel, Alex, and Brody Martin; her mother, Janice Glass of Kings Mountain; her siblings, Harold Moffitt Glass, Jr. and Terry Campbell; her sister-in-law, Cecelia Glass; and her nieces and nephews, Trey, Blake, and Tori Glass, and Lindsey Crawford. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Moffitt Glass, Sr.
Services will be held on Friday, November 19th from 1-3 pm at Patriots Park in Kings Mountain.

COLUMBIA, SC – Ken Plonk, age 72, died unexpectedly at his home in Columbia, South Carolina on October 30, 2021. Ken was born November 7, 1948, in Charlotte, NC to his late parents Clarence Samuel Plonk and Julia Pollock Plonk of Kings Mountain. Ken was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Rebecca Marvin Plonk. Ken is survived by brothers Thomas Plonk, Mike Plonk (Sue), Steve Plonk (Susan Thisell), Richard Plonk, sister Judy Plonk Davis (Steve Davis) and longtime friend Jaycie Claire.  Ken was devoted to his extended family, and well loved by his nieces and nephews.
Ken was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina. He loved his Tar Heels, a good debate, children, great food, pheasant hunting, bow hunting, the great outdoors, cats, dogs, wildlife and most of, all family gatherings.  He was a kind, sweet, and an extravagantly giving man. He followed politics with a keen mind and invested in real estate for pleasure.

NASHVILLE, TN – Dennis Raymond Caveny, age 58, of Nashville, TN finished his race on earth in the early hours of Sunday, November 14, 2021, about 18 months after being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Dennis grew up in Kings Mountain, NC, and after traveling to France in High School, looked for more ways to see more places around the world. His job in his early 20s for Piedmont Airlines allowed him the ability to travel to many states in the U.S., then a later job with Sony Music sent him to several countries in Asia, South America and Central America. In the late 90s, after a short-term mission’s trip to Kenya, he moved his family to Uganda for a long-term missionary assignment. After his time in Africa, he gained such a love for the people he met that he made multiple return trips there over the years.
Dennis was always up for an adventure, and he could talk engagingly with anyone. He loved a good story, and he loved to laugh. After he was diagnosed with ALS in May of 2020, he purposed to live more intentionally, and he and his family made some special memories in his last 18 months on earth.
Dennis’s deep and abiding hope and faith rested in Jesus Christ, and his greatest desire was that his journey would be a testimony that would point people to be reconciled to God; we feel like he did just that with valor and grace.
Dennis is survived by Danielle, his bride of six years; his son, Aaron Caveny (Madison, daughter-in-love); his son, Christopher Caveny; his daughter, Anna Caveny; his daughter, Elise Caveny; his only granddaughter, Colbie Caveny; his mother, Frances Caveny; his brother, Dale Caveny; and a host of other family and friends who loved and were loved by Dennis. He is preceded in death by his father, Floyd “Sam” Caveny.
A Celebration of Life service to honor and remember Dennis will be held at New Song Nashville, 316 Southgate Ct., Brentwood, TN on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 10:30 a.m.

Kings Mountain, NC  – On October 28th, Bradine L. Tyner, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away at the age of 82 in Charlotte, NC. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 42 years, Wade H. Tyner, and her parents, Brady and Grathel Lail of Grover, NC.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin Queen and Anne Pipkin; her grandchildren, Lauren Queen and Lance Queen, all of Charlotte, NC; and her sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Robert Harry of Shelby, NC.
She was most known for co-owning and operating Wade Ford in Kings Mountain with her husband for over 35 years. She had a love of international and domestic travel, and living on Moss Lake.
A graveside service in the family cemetery was held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 6th at Allen Memorial Baptist Church in Grover, NC.

 KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC –  Rafael Lugo, age 93, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on October 25, 2021 at Dalton Place in Dalton, GA.
Born in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, He was son of the late  Rafael Lugo, Sr. and Grasiana Lisojo Lugo. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Lugo; 4 brothers and 5 sisters.
Mr. Lugo was a member of the Eighth Street Church of God, Bessemer City, NC where he was active in the prison ministry.  He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was recipient of the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Purple Heart.
He is surved by his sons: Benjamin Lugo and wife Tracy, North Augusta, SC;   Eli Lugo and wife Mitzi, Cleveland, TN; Arnalzo Lugo, Hayesville, NC; 7 grandchildren and 9 great -grandchildren.

She was born in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late Herbert Odell and Rose Ruth McCurry Smart and was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Eugene Williams, a daughter, Dawn Prater Bell, a great granddaughter, Madyson Bell and a brother, Ronnie Smart.
Vicky enjoyed golfing, fishing, going shopping and attending the races. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who was affectionately known as G-Maw by many. Vicky loved to spend time with the people she loved the most, her family. She will be missed dearly by everyone who knew her.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Ernst Borchert III, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on October 28, 2021 at his home.
He was born in Anaheim, CA, son of the late Eric Borchert Sr. and Perciclair Head Borchert and was preceded in death by his brother, Eric Borchert, II.
Ernst was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Kings Mountain. He retired from Huffman Corporation where he worked as a mechanical engineer for over 30 years. After his retirement, Ernst realized his life long dream of becoming a farmer. He enjoyed spending time outside, working with the Cleveland County Potato Project for the last 12 years. Ernst had an interest in trains and tractors and loved spending time with his beloved family. He was a 3rd Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus where he has served for many years.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC– Sharon Thompson Boheler, 79, of Kings Mountain, NC, went to be with the Lord on October 28, 2021 at Atrium Health Cleveland in Shelby, NC.
She was born in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late William Boyd and Bertie Elizabeth Barber Thompson and was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Hamrick Boheler. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Sammy, Don, Dick, and Bill Thompson, two sisters, Sandra Miller and Dianne Coggins, and a grandson, Michael Heath.
Sharon was the owner of the Military Park Quick Stop, worked as a cosmetologist, and was a customer service manager at Walmart for many years.
She was a former member of Eastside Baptist Church in Kings Mountain where she sang in the choir and was a Sunday School teacher. Sharon was currently an active member of Royal Praise Ministries. Always active, Sharon enjoyed rock painting, cooking for her friends and loved ones, bird watching, gardening, and studying her bible. She loved spending time with those she loved most, her family and beloved dogs. Her dedication, love, and guidance will be missed greatly by all those who knew and loved her.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Harry Malone Jackson, age 75, of Kings Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Rutherford County, NC to the late William Howard and Essie McFalls Jackson, and moved to Kings Mountain shortly afterward. Harry was also preceded in death by his sister, Claudette Jackson Conner, his twin brother, Larry Salone Jackson., two nieces, Cindy Thompson and Pamela Darlene Jones and his in-laws, John and Beulah Jones.
Harry graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1964, attended Gaston College, and worked at FMC Lithium where he retired after 36 1/2 years of service.
Other than Harry’s passion for his Lord, his family, church family, golf “brothers”  and Mountaineer Cruisers Classic Car Club, he loved living in Kings Mountain, drinking coffee with his buddies and just enjoying life everyday with a big smile on his face. He was an active member of El Bethel United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, served on the Finance Committee, and enjoyed working at their breakfasts over the past several years.
Harry was known by several different names given by his friends, “Fuzz”, “HJ”, but was the best husband and friend to his wife of 50 years, Elaine Jones Jackson and best dad to his daughter, Laura Beth, of the home. He was an avid sports lover and could often be found watching football (Green Bay Packers), baseball (Atlanta Braves), or basketball (Carolina Tarheels). He loved playing golf with his brothers most of all, having made 5 holes-in-one over the years.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elaine Jones Jackson; daughter Laura Beth Jackson, brothers: J.T. “Sonny” Jackson and wife Brenda of Kings Mountain and Jerry Jackson and wife Desiree of Dallas; uncle and aunt Floyd and JoAnn Jackson of Gastonia; sister-in-law Pat Jackson of Kings Mountain;  brothers and sisters in law, Johnny Jones and wife Sandy of Kings Mountain and Carolyn Falls and husband Hal of Gastonia, and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, and you all know he loved you.

She was born in Bowling Green, South Carolina, the first child of the late Jack Hannon and Josie Beatrice Rippy and was preceded in death by 6 brothers and sisters. Darlene was also preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Joe B. Bridges and a son, Larry Dean Bridges. She worked for Bridges Radio and TV Repair Service for 46 years. Darlene enjoyed being at home spending time with her loved ones. She was a dedicated Christian woman who loved taking care of people. KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Bennie Sue Beam, 74, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on October 22, 2021 at Atrium Health Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.
She was born in Cleveland County, NC, the only daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Sessoms Jr and Betty Jo Hartsoe Sessoms and was preceded in death by two brothers, Randy and Scott Sessoms.
Bennie was a dedicated follower of Christ and showed her love for people daily. She was an avid UNC fan and loved watching basketball and football. Bennie enjoyed watching movies based on real life events. She always looked forward to her yearly trip to the mountains with her aunts. Bennie loved to read and enjoyed working crossword and word search puzzles. Her kindness and love will be missed dearly by her loving family.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Clenon Tackett, 75, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on September 27, 2021 at Atrium Cleveland in Shelby, NC.
He was born in Floyd County, KY, son of the late Mack and Elizabeth Jones Tackett and was preceded in death by his eldest brother, Monfort Tackett.
Clenon was an active member of Advent Lutheran Church where he was passionate about serving the Lord and his church family.
He also helped organize the Missions Disaster Warehouse. He served honorably in the US Air Force for 4 years. Clenon worked at Spencer Products in sales management for 35 years. In his spare time, Clenon enjoyed playing golf and making new friends.
His greatest desire in life was for people to hear the word of God and become followers of Christ. Clenon was a genuine person who cared deeply about his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, mentor and Papaw who was extremely proud of his loving family. His guidance, generosity, and love will be missed dearly by everyone who knew him.

She was born February 4, 1957, in Cleveland County, daughter of the late Joseph Cash and Kay Grigg Guin.
Terri attended Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby.
A funeral service was  held on Friday, October 8, 2021, at 6:30 pm  at Bethel Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Tim Sims.

In addition to his mother, Todd is survived by his daughter, Ashley McSwain and fiancé Ron Locklear; son, Jeffrey McSwain Jr. and wife Brandi, both of Kings Mountain; sister, Lynn Black of Patterson Springs; brother, Todd Humphries and wife Michele of Boiling Springs; and grandchildren, Peyton and Jak McSwain.  Services will be private to the family.
